Fireplace Remodel Day Twenty Two

Day #22....in real time, its actually been almost two months to the day since we first swung a hammer, not exactly in anger, but with a strong sense of empowerment. So, it's taken a while to get this far, but I don't think we could have got here any quicker.

It was another beautiful Saturday morning, perfect for a bit of golf actually. But we had other plans, and after a bit of back-and-forth wit spirit level, we got a straight edge attached tut wall which we can use to build our tile.

You have to start somewhere, and we started with the first row of full tiles above the firebox and worked up from there. It may not be obvious, but we have carefully planned out where the tiles will break...

This was as far as we got with the first batch of thinset mortar...

OK, that's the easy bit done....time for a spot of luncheon on the green. Or a quick run overtut chippie fort cod n'chips wit scraps. If only...

As you can see from the next photo, the daylight was staring to fade by the time we got the Schluter edging strips and edge tiles ready to install. This was because we are installing hand made tiles, where each one is a slightly different size and shape....in order to make both outside edges line up perfectly with the Schluter edging, we had to cut all 38 edge tiles individually. Fortunately the water jet-assisted tile saw I bought for the shower pan project was on hand to make this a lot easier than it might have been.

This is how the right side edge came out - quite honestly, it's perfect!

We did the other edge, and filled in the full tiles below the firebox. By this point, fatigue was getting the better of us, so we called it a potato.

To be continued....
